This subtle landscape has a contemporary, modern feel to it. I painted a quick sketch first to decide on the composition and basic color tones. My goal was to cover the entire canvas with thin paint​ and then decide if I liked the direction it was going. I later went back in, tweaking it here and there and covering the canvas with new paint.

This painting was created with many layers using brushes and palette knifes of different sizes. Layers were scraped back to reveal under paintings. It was a fun piece and one I could have kept working on forever - it is difficult to know when to stop!

This painting will be part of the Southern California Plein Air Painting Association's Annual Art Show in July IF not sold by then of course!

This piece was finished in the studio and done with a limited palette of paints.  Burnt Umber is a color I haven't used much in the past.  It makes for some beautiful new colors when combined with the blues and yellows I use.  

I hope you like it - it is one of my favorite pieces I have painted recently.

"Approaching Carmel" Oil, Abstract Landscape, Janet Bludau

Parts of my initial underpainting show through the top layer of paint.  In the final stages I added palette knife markings to the painting, further delineating the shape of different crop sections.

Central California provides many photos for my paintings.  I like the geometric shapes of the land and how it all fits together as a puzzle.

Besides the useful photos,  some of my favorite places to visit are in Central and Northern California.  Carmel is at the top of the list.  Carmel is known for its beautiful coast of course.  The countryside of the Carmel Valley is equally beautiful.

The wood sides have been waxed with a clear Briwax and buffed

There is a red underpainting applied in the first stage of this painting.

After that I have gone in and added layers, changing parts of the painting as I go.

The last stage is where I took several Oil Sticks to the grass areas and also scratched into the oil with palette knives.

Each of these are oil on 12" Square Deep Birch Panels.

My plan is to go back in when they dry a bit, using oil sticks first. 

Then I will scratch through the oil stick applications, using palette knives. 

I hung them up together to decide if I like all the red showing through or if there is just too much of it.  Any opinions?

Via Antibes is a wide street on the charming penninsula of Lido, in Newport Beach California. 

Palm Trees are plentiful, as are boats and beautiful homes.  

I have been a bad, bad blog poster lately.  You just can't do it all.......  3 paintings sold over the weekend so I'm a bit fired up.  Thus the posting energy.  One of them is Floating Through Life below.

Both my paintings sold the first night at the Higbee 6" Squared Show.

Not only was that wonderful but it is a fun evening.

The turnout was huge - shoulder to shoulder art lovers!

I have been a very lazy blogger of late.  Not so much lazy but having to put a few other things first in my life.  I am thinking I have a period of "back to normal" here for awhile so its back to painting for me.  Kind of intimidating to start.  I keep finding other little jobs I have to do to prep for painting.  Then I tell myself, "no more, just open the tubes of paint and go!"  We'll see if I do it today.

Red Country Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon - Abstract Landscape - Janet Bludau Fine Art

Framed in a simple, contemporary floater frame or unframed

Red Country Hills is a painting that developed over time - very typical of the way I like to paint.  First, I painted my canvas solid red.  I then lightly sketched a rough drawing, placing the larger areas where I wanted them and deciding on the scale for the barn and trees.  My image was a photo I had taken in the countryside just outside of Eugene, Oregon where my daughter was finishing up college.  This beautiful scene is located in the wine country of Willamette Valley.

Next, color was started, being careful to save bits of my red undercoat.  It is a push and pull process, sometimes scraping back a color that I am disappointed with and trying other options.  My favorite "part" of the painting is the light turquoise layer that runs under the trees and barn structures.  This was applied using the side of a palette knife and dragging the paint over and down the earlier layers.

The reeds, where the water meets the grass, were drawn in first with oil sticks and some oil brush strokes.  I then used palette knives to scratch through the color with upward, vertical strokes.

Bits of the red underpainting show through also.

This painting started out with a solid layer of red paint.

From there, I did a simple drawing with very light, thin paint.

I mixed a few colors I thought I might like to use on my palette.

I then started with brushwork but still staying thin with my paint, being careful not to cover up all of my red undercoat.  After I was happy with my colors on the canvas, I went back in with thicker paint with my brushes and palette knives.  Again, being careful not to cover up all my red beneath.  Lastly, I did some scraping with the side of my knife in the foreground which gives us more grass like shapes and again, more undercoat to show through.

Collector Art Shop, Berkeley, Reception

I have been out of town and therefore no posting.  I always think I am going to have plenty of time for my computer duties while on the road but it is rare.  There are photos to take and friends to see and new places to check out.........  First stop was Santa Barbara for a 3 day anniversary celebration and some relaxation.  We then headed up 101 through the beautiful central coast wine areas, ending up in Kensington at Amy and Hugh's.  This was to be our home for the next 2 nights.  I am probably 5 pounds heavier because of their wonderful cooking and our one pizza night.  We couldn't just get pizza from one shop, we had to bring in several for a tasting dinner.  I reconnected with one of my best friends in Berkeley who I haven't seen in years and she took a box of my small 6" paintings that she is just sure she will find homes for!  The opening reception at Collector Art Shop was on Friday evening. Shown here is one group of my work.  They also had me represented in the front window and several other places in the gallery.  It was a great evening of old friends, local art lovers to meet, music and wine.  The trip was topped off with a wonderful visit with my husband's son's family - very fun.
