The reeds, where the water meets the grass, were drawn in first with oil sticks and some oil brush strokes.  I then used palette knives to scratch through the color with upward, vertical strokes.

Bits of the red underpainting show through also.

I recently came back from a really enjoyable 4 day workshop by Marla Baggetta, a Portland based artist.  Marla's medium is primarily soft pastels but she uses a lot of acrylics also.  I found a kindred spirit:  I get teased about how many paths I paint and here was someone else who sure does paint a lot of paths!  I came home and painted this on board with oil, instead of paper with soft pastels.  Our "styles" are different.  She has a beautiful, loose, free way with her work.  That is also one of the reasons I wanted to learn from her.  I am always wanting to loosen up, as are most artists I know.  Its wonderful to incorporate a few new techniques or, what I have especially liked are the words that come to me from prior classes.  "What If" came to me with this piece and I started scraping  the blue paint back to the red.  At the end of the day though, when you line a group of paintings up, you will most likely know which painting belongs to which painter.  Mine typically have that contemporary, angular style.

The thicker paint usually brings the subject to the foreground.  You can see
 this in the Water Reflection, Dock, Boats, and Pilings.

There are so many times that it is difficult to know when you are finished with a painting.

This one was so effortless and I honestly think that is when you create your best work.

I stepped back from my easel when I was thinking I was finished and thought that this piece is one of my favorites I have ever painted.  You may be thinking, "wow, poor thing!"

You have to like abstraction of course.  

I brought it in to my husband who is quite conservative in his art taste (everything else for that matter!)

He is also brutally honest with his criticism.  I turned the painting around slowly and prepared myself.

He said, "I think this is one of your best paintings!  It reminds me of the coast of Carmel."

So there you have it - for whatever its worth - the Bludaus like this one :)

Paint is applied thickly with spots of red undercoat showing through.

I am very pleased with the results - especially the thick, yummy blues and greens of the bay.

This painting started out quite different, as many paintings do for me.

I honestly can't remember the original painting.  After it dried, I just wasn't happy with it.  I then painted pretty much the same painting you see above but in a completely different color palette.

It dried - boring.

Such is the life of a painter.  And of a perfectionist I suppose.

Row 2 - Abstract Row Boat Paintings

This 6 x 6 Oil on Archival Board Painting is #2 in a series of 3.  

The color palette is the same with all three and here is the reason I like doing three paintings in the same palette with a similar composition.........

I do my fair share of art shows.  I often will find that a person is very attracted to one of my 6 x 6's and yet they want something else to "go with it".  If I have 3 paintings to offer, they can either purchase 1, 2 or 3 paintings, and hang them together,  framed separately, or, all 3 can be framed together in the same frame as a triptych.  If you aren't sure what I mean by this, email me and I will send you a photo.

At Ease

At Ease is my latest painting of local dinghy boats.  

All the others have sold but this one is available,  being fairly "hot off the easel"! 

 They haven't all included dock or pier pilings but I love the strong verticals that these pillars provide.   This piece I painted a bit larger and also pushed the color - I like it and hope you do also!

Painting palm trees with a palette knife is a lot of fun.  I love how they look also.
