I had a great time painting this.  I did not start with a sketch or any preconceived idea of how the finished piece would look.  I had a few extra hours one day in the studio and started with the rough outline of the vase.  The background was several other colors before I tried the white - love the white.

I painted this a few weeks ago in a studio with several artist friends.  We are together sometimes twice a week and one of the best things about painting together is the feedback from other artists you respect.

I had finished the main painting I had been working on for the day but was really on a roll.  I really enjoy the first part of creating a painting, when you are putting your first creativity into a piece yet are far from a finished product so there is none of the pressure that comes with a perfectionist nature - "who me???"

I had finished the piece but didn't know it yet when another artist walked over to check out my easel.

She almost yelled.  "Stop, don't you dare put another stroke on that!"  

She went on to explain how she loved the simplicity and how contemporary the painting was at this point.  Had I kept fussing with it she was concerned I would lose that.  I made myself stop and at least wait for awhile while I worked on starting another piece,  while at the same time checking back now and then with my eyes to see what I thought, over and over again!

I decided I agreed with her and hope you do too.

Looks wonderful in a wooden floater frame - email me for a photo

This painting evolved as so many of my paintings do.  I start out maybe with a photo that I have taken.  Pretty soon I have eliminated a portion of it,  added a tree or two,  changed most of the colors and then I think, "who needs this photo anyway?"  This painting could be representative of so many different places.  Each person viewing it could probably come up with a location it reminds them of.  To me, it is view from the home where I lived on Maui.  Beyond the fence you see here (which really was a stone wall with a little gate) was a lower pasture where a friend kept his horse.  The horse was wonderful at keeping the grass down some.  Most of the time you really needed to wear your "wellies" if you were going to stray off the path, as the grass was high and ground uneven.  There were several huge avocado trees in the pasture and in the spring we had sweet peas (low growing kind) growing wild - more than you could ever want.

Here is the third painting for my latest triptych.  Next post,  I will show you a photo of the three of them framed together!  They are all 6 x 6" oil pieces on board and inspired by my love of the abstract and geometric views of farmland scenes.

Here is the second 6x6 that will make up my next triptych.   I will post the third soon and follow with the three of them framed.  I know you can hardly stand the suspense!
